What is a Dental Bridge?

As the name suggests, a dental bridge acts as a bridge between natural teeth. It is composed of high-quality replacement teeth that are cemented in place. The bridge fills in a space in your mouth where teeth are missing, and connects to the neighboring teeth. It is not removable.

Who is a Candidate for a Dental Bridge?

People who have lost one or more teeth may be a good candidate for a dental bridge. Dental bridges do rely on the teeth next to the gap, so it is not an option for someone who has lost all or most of their teeth. Dr. Davis at A Touch of Art Dental Studio can help you decide if a tooth bridge is a good choice for your situation.

Benefits of Dental Bridges

  • Makes chewing easier. If you are missing teeth, you may have difficulty eating certain foods.
  • Aids in correct speech and pronunciation.
  • Gives you a healthy smile that you can be proud to show off.
  • Keeps your natural teeth from shifting in your mouth.
  • Gives your facial structure a natural fullness, eliminating sunken cheeks due to tooth loss.

The Dental Bridge Process

The process of getting a dental bridge begins with an examination appointment. Dr. Davis will carefully study your teeth and prepare a plan for the dental bridge procedure using digital scans of your mouth. The abutment teeth (the two teeth that will support the bridge) will need some preparation. Each abutment tooth will get a dental crown, so the tooth may need some reshaping. You will be given a temporary bridge to use until your next appointment.

The dental bridge will be fabricated at a dental lab. When it is ready, we will place the bridge on the abutment teeth with dental cement. Any necessary adjustments will be made to ensure a proper fit.

The fixed bridge procedure typically does not involve any type of dental surgery. There is usually no pain involved, except for tenderness in your gums as your mouth adjusts to the bridge.

How Long Does a Tooth Bridge Last?

Dental bridges are designed to last 5 to 15 years. Taking good care of them may increase their lifespan. You should brush your bridge twice a day, just like your natural teeth. Floss them regularly, and use mouthwash. Your replacement teeth won’t ever get cavities, but you still need to care for your gums and the rest of the teeth in your mouth.
